Mauled: When Police Use Dogs as Weapons

Commentary from January 18, 2022

Guests included Manuel Torres of The Marshall Project and Challen Stephens of Alabama Media Group.

Even in low-level offenses, police dogs are used in extreme ways. Many victims are young Black individuals involved in non-violent situations.

Police use dogs as a compliance tool — using pain to force obedience.

There are over 3,500 police dog bite incidents yearly, with a disproportionate impact on Black communities. Officers often lack full control, and accountability remains limited.

In prisons like Red Onion in Virginia, dogs are used as tools of intimidation and control, raising serious human rights concerns.

Evidence continues to show systemic misuse and racial disparities in enforcement practices.

Democracy cannot coexist with racism. Real change requires awareness, advocacy, and action.

“Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did. It never will.”

— Frederick Douglass
